About Tampa International

Consistently rated one of the easiest big airports in the country to use, and built around a central terminal with satellite airsides.

Tampa International handled 24,811,253 passengers in 2025. Its design is the reason people like it: a central Landside Terminal where you check in and collect bags, and four satellite Airsides, A, C, E and F, holding 59 gates between them, each reached by a short automated shuttle ride rather than a long walk.

Atlanta is comfortably the busiest route at 991,737 passengers, followed by Charlotte and Denver. Internationally Toronto leads, then Panama City and Frankfurt. It is a mix of hub feed, leisure and a steady Canadian snowbird flow that peaks hard in winter.

Since 2018 the SkyConnect automated train has linked the terminal to the Rental Car Center, a 2.6 million square foot building with room for 5,300 cars, on a three-station pinched loop. It is worth knowing which SkyConnect stop you actually need, because the rental center and the parking areas are not the same destination.

Getting to TPA

All the practical access info, by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

The airport sits six miles west of downtown Tampa and is reached from the surrounding expressway network on the west side of the city. It is close in by big-airport standards, and the approach roads are short.

By rail

There is no rail link to the terminal. The SkyConnect train is an on-airport system, not a connection to the city.

By bus / coach

HART local bus services call at the airport.

Also worth knowing

With no rail connection to Tampa itself, most departures start in a car, and the airport's own parking operation is correspondingly large.

The parking landscape

How parking works at Tampa International

The airport runs a Short-Term Garage and a Long-Term Garage, both giving the first 60 minutes free, plus the Economy Parking Garage and Lot south of the terminal, which gives the first 15 minutes free and is normally the cheapest official option. There is also a free Cell Phone Waiting Lot.

The height limits matter more here than at most airports and are easy to miss. The Long-Term Garage takes vehicles up to 7 feet 10 inches. The Economy Garage takes up to 8 feet if you are under cover, and up to 13 feet on the uncovered surface lot.

That means anything with a roof box, a raised suspension, a van body or a truck cap is not getting into the Long-Term Garage. If you are driving something tall, the uncovered part of the Economy lot is the option that fits.

Pro tips

Tips travelers wish they'd known

  • Measure your vehicle if it is anything other than a standard car. The Long-Term Garage tops out at 7 feet 10 inches and turning up too tall with a flight to catch is a bad morning.
  • A roof box will usually put you over the garage limits. Plan for the uncovered Economy surface lot, which takes up to 13 feet.
  • The Economy Parking Garage and Lot sits south of the terminal and is normally the best official daily rate, but confirm availability ahead in winter when the Canadian traffic peaks.
  • SkyConnect goes to the Rental Car Center. Do not assume it is the way to your parking space, because it is a different destination.
