About Houston George Bush

One of United Airlines' largest hubs, and the main long-haul gateway for the US Gulf Coast.

George Bush Intercontinental handled 48.1 million passengers in 2025 across five terminals and 116 gates. It is one of United Airlines' largest hubs, and it carries an unusually heavy long-haul load for a US airport outside the coastal gateways: Houston to Sydney is United's longest nonstop at 8,596 miles, and as of April 2026 it is the longest nonstop route flown by any US airline.

The terminals split cleanly by airline. Terminal A takes non-United domestic carriers, Terminal B is United Express, Terminal C is United domestic, Terminal D handles non-United international traffic and is built to take the largest widebodies, and Terminal E is United international and international arrivals. A 22-gate expansion to Terminal B's north concourse is due in fall 2026.

Two separate people movers connect the site, and knowing which one you need matters when you are parking. The Skyway runs airside between all five terminals, so it is only usable once you are through security. The Subway runs landside, linking the five terminals and the airport hotel, and that is the one you use walking in from a garage.

Getting to IAH

All the practical access info, by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

The airport sits north of the city between I-45 and I-69/US-59, with direct access off the Hardy Toll Road. It is a genuine 23 miles from downtown, so build in real driving time rather than treating it as a city-edge airport.

By rail

There is no rail link to IAH. Every ground connection is by road.

By bus / coach

METRO Route 102 runs between the airport, greater Greenspoint and downtown, and Route 500 Downtown Direct runs nonstop to downtown Houston.

Also worth knowing

With no train and a long run into the city, most Houston departures start in a car, which is why the park-and-fly market here is as deep as it is.

The parking landscape

How parking works at Houston George Bush

The airport runs terminal garages alongside its own economy operation, branded ecopark at 16152 John F. Kennedy Boulevard and ecopark2 at 5021 Will Clayton Parkway, both linked to the terminals by a 24-hour shuttle fleet. Valet, Parking Plus and dedicated Veterans parking sit on top of that, and EV charging is available on site.

Two rules changed the picture in 2026 and they catch people out. ecopark2 moved to reservation only from June 1, 2026. Separately, once garage capacity hits 85 percent the airport permits pre-booked reservations only, so arriving on spec at a busy hour can leave you locked out of the garage you planned on.

That is the practical argument for booking a space in advance at Houston rather than anywhere else on this list: the airport itself now turns away drive-up traffic once it fills, and a reservation is the only thing that guarantees you a space at all.

Pro tips

Tips travelers wish they'd known

  • Book ahead rather than turning up. IAH stops admitting drive-up traffic to its garages at 85 percent capacity, so a busy morning can shut you out with a flight to catch.
  • Check whether you fly from Terminal D or Terminal E before you park. Both are international, but D is non-United and E is United, and they are different buildings.
  • The Subway is the landside people mover and the Skyway is airside. Walking in from a parking facility you want the Subway, not the Skyway.
  • Allow more time than the mileage suggests. Twenty-three miles of Houston freeway is not twenty-three quiet miles, especially inbound on a weekday morning.
Frequently asked

IAH questions, answered

The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from Houston George Bush.

How early should I arrive at Houston Bush?+

Two hours for domestic flights and three for international. Add time for the drive itself, because IAH is 23 miles out from downtown and the freeway approaches are unpredictable.

Can I just turn up and park at IAH?+

Not reliably. Once garage capacity reaches 85 percent the airport admits pre-booked reservations only, and ecopark2 has been reservation only since June 1, 2026. Booking ahead is the only way to guarantee a space.

What is the difference between the Skyway and the Subway?+

The Skyway connects all five terminals airside, after security. The Subway connects the terminals and the airport hotel landside, before security. Coming in from a parking facility, the Subway is the one you need.

Which terminal do international flights use?+

Both D and E. Terminal D handles non-United international carriers and Terminal E handles United's international departures and arrivals, so check your airline rather than assuming.
