About Phoenix Sky Harbor
The busiest airport in Arizona, and one of the closest large airports to its own downtown.
Phoenix Sky Harbor handled more than 51.6 million passengers in 2025, only the second time it has passed 50 million. It is a major American Airlines hub and Southwest's largest western base.
Sky Harbor is unusually close to the city, sitting barely four miles from downtown, which keeps drive times short by big-hub standards. Passenger traffic runs through Terminals 3 and 4, with Terminal 4 handling the large majority.
The airport's defining feature for anyone parking is the PHX Sky Train: a free automated train that links the economy parking areas, both terminals, the Rental Car Center and the Valley Metro light rail. It removes the shuttle-bus lottery that shapes parking at most airports this size.

Reach the airport from I-10, SR-143 or the Loop 202, all of which feed the airport roadways. Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 have separate entrances, so know your terminal before the split.
Valley Metro light rail connects at 44th and Washington streets, where the free PHX Sky Train runs into the terminals.

The PHX Sky Train runs 24 hours a day, roughly every three minutes, and is free. It links East Economy parking, the 24th Street economy area, Terminals 3 and 4 and the Rental Car Center.

Terminal garages sit directly against Terminals 3 and 4 and are the quickest option from car to checkpoint, at the highest price.
The airport's East Economy and 24th Street economy parking areas are the cheaper on-airport choice, and both connect to the terminals by the free PHX Sky Train rather than a bus. From East Economy you ride straight through to Terminals 3 and 4.
Independent off-airport operators around the airport perimeter run their own shuttles and generally undercut the airport's economy rate, particularly on longer stays.
Tips travelers wish they'd known
- The Sky Train, not a shuttle bus, connects the economy lots. It runs every few minutes around the clock, so on-airport economy here is less of a compromise than at most large airports.
- Confirm Terminal 3 or Terminal 4 before you drive in. They have separate roadway entrances and Terminal 4 handles most of the traffic.
- Phoenix summers routinely pass 40C. A car left uncovered for two weeks in July takes a beating, so price covered parking properly rather than defaulting to the cheapest uncovered bay.
- Sky Harbor's proximity to downtown means short drive times, but it also means less margin if the freeway backs up. Do not shave the buffer just because it is only four miles.
