About Charlotte Douglas

American Airlines' second largest hub, and home to the world's largest regional airline operation.

Charlotte Douglas handled roughly 51.9 million passengers in 2025, down 8.9 percent on the year before, from a single terminal with 124 gates spread across five concourses. Concourse A takes American and other carriers, Concourses B and C are American domestic, Concourse D handles international, and Concourse E is American Eagle's regional operation, the largest of its kind anywhere in the world.

That single-terminal layout is the defining feature for anyone parking here. There is one building, so there is no risk of parking on the wrong side of the airport, but there is also one set of curbs and decks absorbing the entire hub's traffic at once.

The route map is a mix of hub feed and leisure. Orlando is the busiest domestic destination at 725,120 passengers in the year to May 2026, followed by Dallas-Fort Worth, LaGuardia, Miami and Chicago O'Hare. On the international side London Heathrow leads at 498,422, then Cancun, Punta Cana, Munich and Montego Bay.

Getting to CLT

All the practical access info, by car, train, coach and otherwise.

By road

The terminal is reached by Josh Birmingham Parkway, which connects to Wilkinson Boulevard for I-485 and uptown, Little Rock Road for I-85, and Billy Graham Parkway for I-77. Three interstates feed the airport from different directions, so pick your approach before you set off.

By rail

There is no rail link. The proposed LYNX Silver Line light rail is tentatively planned for 2037.

By bus / coach

Charlotte Area Transit System Route 5 runs to uptown Charlotte, and Route 60 connects to the LYNX Tyvola station.

Also worth knowing

With no train to the terminal and a compact 6 mile run from uptown, Charlotte is a driving airport, and its parking demand reflects that.

The parking landscape

How parking works at Charlotte Douglas

The airport's own parking runs in tiers by distance. Closest in are the Hourly Deck and the Daily Decks, plus valet and the Express Deck, which is offered as Express Deck Preferred and Express Deck Self-Park.

Further out are the Daily North Lot and the two long-stay surface lots, Long Term Lot 1 and Long Term Lot 2, which are the airport's value tier and shuttle-served rather than walkable. There is also a Cell Phone Lot for collecting arrivals.

Because everything at Charlotte funnels into one terminal, the decks closest to the door absorb the sharpest demand. The further tiers are where the value sits, and booking ahead is what makes them dependable rather than a gamble on the day.

Pro tips

Tips travelers wish they'd known

  • One terminal means one set of decks for the whole hub. The close-in Hourly and Daily Decks fill first, so do not count on finding a space in them at a peak hour.
  • Know which parkway you want. Wilkinson Boulevard, Little Rock Road and Billy Graham Parkway feed the airport from I-485, I-85 and I-77 respectively, and taking the wrong one adds real time.
  • Concourse E is American Eagle and it is enormous, the largest regional operation in the world. If you are on a regional flight, the walk from the deck to your gate is longer than the single-terminal layout suggests.
  • Charlotte is a connecting hub, so departure banks cluster. Arriving between banks is noticeably easier than arriving into one.
Frequently asked

CLT questions, answered

The questions our 24/7 team gets asked most about flying from Charlotte Douglas.

How early should I arrive at Charlotte Douglas?+

Two hours for domestic flights and three for international. Charlotte's hub banks concentrate departures, so the security lines are lumpy rather than steady through the day.

Is there just one terminal at CLT?+

Yes. Charlotte Douglas has a single terminal with 124 gates across five concourses, A to E, so you cannot park on the wrong side of the airport.

Which parking at CLT is walkable and which needs a shuttle?+

The decks closest to the terminal, including the Hourly Deck, the Daily Decks and the Express Deck, are the close-in tier. The Daily North Lot and Long Term Lots 1 and 2 sit further out and are shuttle-served.

Can I get to Charlotte airport by train?+

Not at present. Charlotte Area Transit System Route 5 runs to uptown and Route 60 connects to LYNX Tyvola station. The proposed LYNX Silver Line is tentatively planned for 2037.
